Using only natural soil colors, Luzia's artistic process often involves embarking on expeditions to discover vibrant soils, carrying a shovel and containers in her car to collect unique samples. She has also developed a groundbreaking technique using resin, which allows the soil to adhere to the canvas without damage.
The search for the perfect soil color
Luzia's paintings are entirely free from artificial colorants, her vibrant hues are sourced naturally from the soil. To procure such materials, Luzia embarks on extensive expeditions, exploring various locations in search of the perfect hues. The colors of the soil are influenced by the minerals present in the area and the historical events that have shaped it. Reddish and yellow tones, for instance, are linked to iron oxides, while the rich brown tint of soil develops over thousands of years as it accumulates carbon. Sometimes, these colors can be found close to home, but other times, Luzia must travel far and wide to collect just the right hue. A crucial aspect of Luzia's artistic process involves keen exploration and a discerning eye for identifying the ideal colors in nature. Often, exotic colors are discovered as small clods mixed among the more natural-looking tones. It takes a skilled eye and years of experience to recognize and utilize these colors effectively, and Luzia possesses both in abundance.

Mixing art and nature
To paint with soil, Luzia has developed a resin that imparts the painted aspect to her pieces. However, to effectively mix the soil with resin, Luzia meticulously treats the soil to remove any particles that could disrupt the color or hinder the mixing process. This innovative resin enables Luzia to reuse her soil ink even after it has dried, ensuring that none of her precious soil colors are lost. Given the uniqueness of each color and the challenge of finding exact matches, preserving and reusing her soil colors is essential for Luzia's artistic process.
The diversity of colors that Luzia has collected over the years is truly remarkable. Her collection spans a wide spectrum, ranging from natural earth tones like yellow, red, brown, and salmon to vibrant hues such as purple, green, grey-blue, and pink. In her extensive experience, Luzia has been surprised to uncover unexpected colors during her expeditions, including white and green, adding even more depth and intrigue to her artistic palette.
Painting with soil
Throughout the years, Luzia has cultivated a multitude of techniques and styles for painting with soil. Prior to her portrait era, she explored a wide array of free-style pieces, allowing her creativity and intuition to shape the process. During this period, Luzia produced numerous abstracts and geometric pieces, which remain among her most cherished works to this day. These pieces stand as a testament to her artistic versatility and the depth of her creative expression.
Around 2000, Luzia began creating landscapes, which became prominent features in many of her exhibitions. As some of these works were reinterpretations of existing pieces or places, Luzia needed to adopt a different approach from her usual free-style method to ensure the faithfulness of the original compositions. Additionally, Luzia explored reinterpretations of historical artworks such as the Mona Lisa and Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait.
In 2007, Luzia embarked on a marketing initiative where she painted portraits of numerous Brazilian famous figures and sent the pieces as gifts. This experience proved to be incredibly inspiring for Luzia, fueling her desire to delve further into the realm of portraiture. Between 2008 and 2014, Luzia created, displayed, and sold many portrait paintings.
Luzia holds a firm belief that anything can be painted with soil, and she is determined to showcase the world the diversity of her style and the types of painting she offers. With a boundless creative spirit and a commitment to innovation, Luzia continues to push the boundaries of her artistry, exploring new subjects and techniques to express her unique vision through soil-based painting.
